Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim following growing tensions with the club’s leadership, the Premier League side confirmed on Monday. The Portuguese coach departs after 14 months in charge, with his final game being Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Leeds, leaving United sixth in the league.
Amorim was informed of his dismissal in a Monday morning meeting with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. In a statement, the club said, “The leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.”
The Portuguese boss had previously stressed in his final press conference that he came to Manchester United to be a manager rather than a coach, amid increasing friction with the Old Trafford hierarchy. Reports indicate that the decision followed weeks of mounting tensions between Amorim and club officials.
