SAD….Niger Delta Militants murder 4 soldiers,one other

– The military, however, claimed that no man was lost by the JTF

– The incident was confirmed by the chairman of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide Central Zone, Mr. Tare Porri who condemned the killing of the soldiers, Conflicting reports have trailed the deaths of some military men attached to the Joint Task Force (JTF) fighting militancy in the Niger Delta. The incident occurred on Wednesday, August 30.

According to Thisday, some gunmen suspected to be militants ambushed and killed the four soldiers and a civilian along the waterways of Letugbene, Ekeremor local government area, Bayelsa state.

Maj. Ibrahim Abdullahi, however, claimed that no man was lost by the JTF. According to him, the soldiers were initially missing but they had all returned and joined their colleagues in their regular units. “They have all returned. They were thought to be missing before, but they have been found alive and have since rejoined their fellow soldiers in the places they were deployed. So, I can tell you that no soldier died.” “If the soldiers weren’t alive there is no way I will tell you that they have rejoined their colleagues,”

Abdullahi said However, sources disclosed that the incident indeed took place. The team of soldiers were allegedly ambushed on their return from Letugbene community. The soldiers were overpowered by some armed men who seized their arms and moved them to a location in the creeks.

The solderers were subsequently shot dead including one of the civilians, a boat driver was said to have escaped initially.  The incident was confirmed by the chairman of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Central Zone, Mr. Tare Porri,who condemned the killing of the soldiers. “Two days ago, four military officers were killed in cold blood alongside other civilians. Military officers went to Letugbene community and on their way back, some persons accosted them and killed all of them. “Only one of them escaped. Military, yesterday morning retaliated, invaded the communities and burnt down houses. The operations are still ongoing and it is spreading to other communities like Ebelabiri,” Porri said.

The incident was also said to have been confirmed by a police who did not want his name mentioned had reported that Niger Delta militants issued fresh threats to northerners in the region to vacate before October 1 or they risk facing their wrath. The militants had issued a threat following a 90-day ultimatum given to Igbos in the north asking that oil blocs belonging to northerners be forfeited.
