Senate confirms Tanko as CJN tomorrow

Muhammadu Buhari in handshake with Muhammad Tanko

President of the Senate, Dr. Ahmad Lawan, has announced that the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, would be screened tomorrow, Wednesday, July 17 by the Committee of the Whole.

Lawan, who made the announcement during plenary, urged his colleagues to be prepared for the screening by not only studying the curriculum vitae of the Acting CJN, but come to the chamber on time.

President Muhammadu Buhari had last week written to the Senate, seeking confirmation of the appointment of Muhammad as the substantive CJN.

In the letters were read on the floor of the Senate by Lawan, President Buhari explained that the requests were in line with constitutional provisions.

Specifically, the President stated that he relies on power conferred on him by Section 231 (4) of the 1999 Constitution as amended to forward the nomination.

The National Judicial Council, NJC had since recommended Justice Tanko to President Buhari for appointment as substantive CJN.

Justice Muhammad was sworn in by President following the suspension of his predecessor, Justice Walter Onnoghen as CJN on January 25, 2019  by President Buhari on the order of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT over some constitutional breaches.
