Disturbed by the menace of child trafficking and slavery of persons in Nigeria, the Senate has mandated its Committees on Women Affairs; Youth Development; and Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to probe the activities of child traffickers in the country by putting in place an investigative hearing with a view to proffering urgent solutions to it.

The upper legislative chamber implored agencies that are responsible, especially NAPTIP to urgently curb and eliminate the ugly trend while urging state governments to take proactive measures to protect children in the country.

By ensuring there is punishment to culprits of the heinous act, the Senate mandated the committees assigned to investigate the matter to fix stiffer penalties for child traffickers.

The decisions followed a motion on the menace sponsored by Senator Barau Jibrin (APC Kano North) and 25 other lawmakers during plenary.

Leading the debate, Jibrin expressed concerned that children are trafficked for purpose of adoption, domestic service, prostitution and other exploitative labour.

The lawmaker pointed out how some children were recently kidnapped in Gombe, FCT, Kano and other states and were sold to willing buyers.

He said even though some of the adopted children were rescued by security agencies and reunited with their parents, others were still in captivity.

According to the lawmaker, the situation is worrisome and that if it is not quickly eradicated, apart from denting the nation’s image, it will also foster child slavery and destroy the future of children.
