Senate okays appointments of new REC, NERC commissioners

Date:

Senate has approved the appointment of Dr. Chukwuemeka J. Chukwu as a Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC representing Abia State of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The Red Chamber, also on Wednesday confirmed the nominations of Aisha Kanti Bello and Dr. Animashaun Fouad Olayinka, as commissioners in the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.

While Bello was reappointed for another term, Olayinka’s own is a new appointment.

Both confirmations were sequel to the consideration of the reports of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, chaired by Senator Simon Lalong (APC, Plateau South) and the Committee on Power, under the leadership of Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA, Abia South), respectively.

Presenting their separate reports, chairmen of both committees said the nominees met the constitutional and professional requirements for the roles they were appointed to oversee.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio commended members of the committees and the chamber for their swift work.

“Let me thank my colleagues, particularly the Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters, for a job well done. I congratulate the newly confirmed electoral commissioner. I wish him success as he take on the responsibilities of INEC, and urge him to act fairly and equitably to promote democracy and ensure justice for all,” he said.

He also praised President Bola Tinubu for submitting what he described as a quality list of nominees for the INEC and NERC positions.

“These are square pegs in square holes. I pray Almighty God grants them the wisdom to do justice—not only to politicians, but also to the Nigerian voter,” Akpabio said.

The Senate President also commended the Committee on Power for a well job done.
