The leadership of the Senate has directed directed its Committee on Police Affairs to carry out investigation on alleged assassination attempt made on the lives of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and family members by unknown gunmen in the early hours of yesterday at their residence in Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja.
Specifically, the upper legislative chamber asked the committee to probe the relevant Police authorities for not responding to distress calls made to them by Ekweremadu during invasion of his residence by the hoodlums.
ROYAL NEWS reports that the deputy senate president had earlier raised alarm on alleged assassination attempt made on his life and other family members.
Ekweremadu, who raised the alarm through order 43 of the Senate standing rules under self explanation said: “It is with gratitude to Almighty God that I will like to tell my colleagues, my constituents and the general public that myself my wife and my son narrowly escaped assassination in the early hours of this morning.
“It was about about 4am this morning, that some people evaded the security in my house and got all the way to my room where I was sleeping with my wife – there was a struggle, there was a fight with heavy commotion and by the grace of God we eventually caught one of them and rest escaped.
“We handed that one over to the police investigating the matter. The annoying aspect of it or the one that is worrisome is that at that point I called the Inspector General of Police, IGP, his phone was off, I called some of his aides, their phones rang out and nobody replied till now, I called DIG operations, till I left my house nobody showed up.
“I now had my people invite the DPO in charge of Apo police station. We didn’t see him till about 5:30, he sent his 2nd-in-command who came and he saw the dangerous weapons that they left behind, he left and sent that the DPO was coming until I left my house by 9am, the DPO had not come.
“Nobody is safe in this country, I want to appeal to my colleagues and the general public that we all continue to be prayerful, be conscious of our private security, it appears that the security is not in the hands of government but the Almighty God.
“It is time for all of us to deal with the issue of security. I believe the police will on top of the matter shortly”.
Consequently in his remarks, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki condemned the alleged poor response of the Police and ordered the Senate Committee on Police Affairs chaired by Senator Abu Ibrahim ( APC Katsina South), to carry out thorough investigation on the attack and Police inaction.
“The attack is unfortunate but what is more disturbing Is the poor response of the police. I hope the police is not being partisan with the way they treat cases.
“I hope Mr. chairman of the police committee find out what happened to ensure that there was no complicity in the whole thing.
“For emergency calls of such magnitude made by the Deputy Senate President not to be responded to by the Police for over seven hours is very unfortunate”, he said.
Earlier before raising the matter on the floor of the Senate , Ekweremadu had through a statement issued by his media aide, Uche Anichukwu alleged that the attack may not be unconnected to a similar one made on his life three years ago in Abuja , precisely on November 17, 2015 from which Police had not conducted any investigation nor made any arrest.
