Senate President Bukola Saraki has referred President Muhammadu Buhari’s nominees for appointment as chairman of the board of Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, Mrs. Ronke Sokefun and the chairman/chief executive of the newly created Nigerian Diaspora Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa for screening.

This followed the executive communication by President Buhari to the upper legislative chamber on the request for confirmation of the nominees, which was read by the Senate Leader, Senator Ahmad Lawan, APC-Yobe North during plenary on Wednesday.

After the Leader had read the letter, Saraki directed that the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions chaired by Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, PDP-Kwara South should screen Sokefun while Committee on Diaspora headed by Senator Rose Okoh, PDP-Cross River South to grill Dabiri-Erewa and report back to the plenary within two weeks.

President Buhari had notified the Senate of his decision to substitute Chief Olabode Akeem Mustapha with Mrs. Sokefun as the chairman, Governing Board of NDIC.

Buhari’s letter on the substitution, dated October 23, 2018 was read recently by the Senate President on the floor of the upper legislative chamber in Abuja.

The president reminded the senators in the letter that his earlier request for confirmation of the appointment of Mustapha as the chairman of the NDIC vide letter dated March 27, is yet to be confirmed by the Senate.

“I now write to inform you of my decision to substitute Chief Olabode Akeem Mustapha with Mrs. Ronke Sokefun as the chairman of the Governing Board”, he stated.

Buhari therefore requested the Senate to consider and confirm the appointment of Sokefun as the chairman of NDIC as well as other members whose names had earlier been forwarded.

Also, the President’s request for the confirmation of Dabiri-Erewa was contained in a letter addressed to the Senate President and read on the floor of the upper legislative chamber, recently in Abuja.

The letter, dated October 24, 2018, reads: “In compliance with Section 2(1) of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission (Establishment) Act, 2017, I write to forward for the confirmation by the Senate, the appointment of Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa as the Executive Chairman/CEO of Nigerian Diaspora Commission”.

President Buhari, in the letter, however, pleaded for the senate’s “usual expeditious consideration” in approving the appointee.

Dabiri-Erewa, before the new status, was the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora. She was also a two time member of the House of Representatives.
