SON collaborates with ISO to create smart cities — DG

Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is collaborating with  International Standard Organisation (ISO) to upgrade Nigeria’s urbanisation standards, the Director-General, Mr Osita  Aboloma,  has said.

 

Aboloma spoke in Abuja on Monday at the celebration of 2017 World Standards Day, with theme, “Standards Make Cities Smart.”

 

“We are working in collaboration with ISO in developing a standard, it is called ISO standard 700, and it states clearly the guidelines for the establishment of smart cities.

 

“That is what we intend to deploy in Nigeria, when we do that, our cities will be smarter and things will work.

 

“It is something we are doing with all other countries in the world and it will be a welcome development in Nigeria to improve the standard of the city through quality infrastructure,’’ he said.

 

Aboloma said to be able to cope with the problems of urbanisation, there was a need to make the cities smarter and more efficient to accommodate the people coming into them.

 

He said SON had responsibility to propagate the use of international standards within the nationalities for trade facilitation and general economic emancipation across the world.

 

Aboloma said: “SON has continued to propagate these global standards through adoption and adaption for local use in all sectors in addition to organising trainings, seminars, workshops and consumer enlightenment activities.

“We are also engaged in the certification of products, systems and processes to internationally acclaimed standards all-round the year.,’’ he said.

 

He used the occasion to present Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP) certificate to eight companies, including Imperial bakery Ltd, Aninze Food and drink Ltd and Jasolobaba table water.

 

Others are Oceanic Catering Nigeria Ltd, Binani Printing Press Ltd, Omega Coat and Allied Product Ltd, Interafric Paint Ltd and 212 Bakery.

 

MANCAP is a mandatory product certification scheme put in place by SON to ensure that all locally manufactured products conformed to Nigerian Industrial Standards.

 

Mr Okechukwu Enelamah, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, said the day provided opportunity for stakeholders across various sectors in Nigeria to discuss how standards could make Nigerian cities smarter.

 

Represented by Hajiya Asiha Abubakar, the Minister of State, Industry, Trade and Investment, Enelamah  said the country should be interested in how to ensure smart mobility through efficient public transportation, reduction in traffic, prevention and quick detection of accidents.

 

“The critical issues of making our cities and buildings smarter from conceptualisation, through design and construction, that provides for safety, access, good ventilation and aesthetics are some of the issues that the theme is calling our attention to.

 

“Smart mobility through efficient public transportation, reduction in traffic, prevention and quick detection of accidents; smart and renewable energy deployment, security solutions, treatment of effluents and smart health care provisions are some of the issues that should interest us.

 

“The vexed issues of building collapse, fire disasters, flooding, improper waste management and the like would be adequately dealt with if the various professional groups and stakeholders working with SON close ranks to optimise the application of international standards.’’

 

World Standards Day is celebrated on Oct. 14 annually but the final event held in Nigeria on Monday.
