South Korea and the United States are reportedly discussing the possible redeployment of U.S. Patriot missile defence systems stationed in South Korea for use in the ongoing war against Iran, according to Seoul officials.
South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun said the two militaries are reviewing the matter but confirmed that Seoul has not received any formal request from Washington for military assistance.
His remarks followed media reports that units of the U.S. mobile missile interceptor system had been moved to Osan Air Base in South Korea, potentially preparing for redeployment to support operations in the Middle East.
The United States Forces Korea stated that it does not comment on the movement or repositioning of military assets for operational security reasons.
The discussions come as U.S. and Israeli forces continue strikes inside Iran in a campaign aimed at degrading Tehran’s nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities, while South Korea hosts a significant U.S. troop presence for deterrence against North Korea.
