Former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore on Friday met with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja to discuss the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Sowore, who disclosed details of the meeting on X (formerly Twitter), said Jonathan agreed that the issue of Kanu’s prolonged incarceration needed to be addressed urgently and decisively.
According to Sowore, the former president also promised to meet with President Bola Tinubu soon to discuss the matter.“Earlier today in Abuja, I met with former President @GEJonathan to discuss the continued incarceration of Mazi @NnamdiKanu,” Sowore wrote.
“President Jonathan agreed that there is an urgent and compelling need to address this matter decisively and justly. I thank him sincerely for recognizing the importance of resolving Kanu’s case in the interest of peace, fairness, and national healing.”
Sowore added that Jonathan’s pledge to meet with Tinubu was “particularly assuring,” noting that the former leader has now joined a growing list of prominent Nigerians calling for Kanu’s release.“Former President Jonathan joins a growing list of Nigerians who have called for justice in Nnamdi Kanu’s case, a list that already includes ex-Vice President @atiku, Femi Falana SAN, Senator @ShehuSani, and many others across political and regional divides,” Sowore said.
He emphasized that Kanu remains in detention “for confronting the long-standing issue of marginalization in Nigeria” and urged the government to release him immediately.“Like other ethnic and regional activists whose politically motivated cases have been withdrawn or dismissed, Nnamdi Kanu should also be released without further delay,” he added.
