Super Falcons frustrated as Algeria seal first-ever WAFCON quarter-final spot

Date:

Algeria’s Lady Fennecs delivered a disciplined performance to hold nine-time champions Nigeria to a 0–0 draw in their final Group B clash at the 13th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Sunday in Casablanca, securing their place in the quarter-finals for the first time in the nation’s history.

The Super Falcons, who had already qualified for the knockout stage following back-to-back wins over Tunisia and Botswana, rotated their starting lineup significantly. Head coach Justine Madugu made eight changes, with stars like Francisca Ordega, Chinwendu Ihezuo, Ifeoma Onumonu, Christy Ucheibe, and Jennifer Echegini all starting alongside captain Rasheedat Ajibade and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.

Despite Nigeria’s attacking firepower, Algeria adopted a compact defensive strategy — similar to Botswana’s approach — crowding their defensive third and frustrating the Falcons throughout the encounter. Goalkeeper Chloé N’gazi Boumrar was outstanding, denying Nigeria with a series of crucial saves.

One of Nigeria’s best opportunities came in the first half, when Ordega’s cross spilled to Onumonu, whose shot was blocked. The pressure continued after the break, with a goalmouth scramble in the 52nd minute and a promising Ajibade run stopped by double marking.

Though the Super Falcons dominated possession and chances, they were unable to break through, while Algeria’s resolute defending and tactical discipline earned them a historic point and a quarter-final ticket.
