Terry G Blames Poor Parenting for Low Self-Esteem

Afrobeats singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has spoken out on the lasting effects of poor parental upbringing on many Nigerians.

The Akpako Master said negative words from parents often lead children to develop low self-esteem, which many carry into adulthood, ultimately hindering their progress.

Writing on his X handle, Terry G explained that repeated discouraging statements at home become internalised and later shape adult behavior. “When you say, ‘you can’t do this, you can’t do that,’ you’re only repeating what your father and mother told you growing up,” he noted.

He urged Nigerians to break the cycle of negativity and adopt a positive mindset. “Now you see you’ve carried that same energy into adulthood, and that’s why many are stuck in failure. It’s time to break that cycle. It’s time to change that mindset,” he wrote.

Nigerian singer Gabriel Oche Amanyi, popularly known as Terry G, has accused American music magazine Billboard of “robbing” him after his songs were excluded from its recently released Top 50 Best Afrobeats Songs of All Time list.

The list, curated by Billboard staff, ranked 2Face Idibia’s iconic track African Queen as number one. Other classics such as Timaya’s Dem Mama, Weird MC’s Ijoya, and Olu Maintain’s Yahooze also featured.

But Terry G’s popular hits, including Akpako Master, Free Madness, and Run Mad, were noticeably absent. Reacting to a post by music monitoring platform Chart Data announcing African Queen as number one, Terry G wrote: “TERRY G robbed.”

His comment sparked mixed reactions among fans. While some agreed he deserved recognition for his impact on Afrobeats, others argued his songs could not rival African Queen for the top spot.
