NNPP Says Kwankwaso Betrayed by Kano Governor’s Defection

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has expressed disappointment over the decision of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the move as a betrayal of trust.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the NNPP’s National Spokesperson, Ladipo Johnson, said the defection deeply disappointed the party’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and undermined the confidence of Kano voters who overwhelmingly supported the NNPP in the 2023 governorship election.

Johnson said the sense of betrayal extended beyond Kwankwaso, noting that residents of Kano State had voted massively for the NNPP after what they considered eight years of poor governance under the APC.

“Of course, he feels betrayed, but this goes beyond Senator Kwankwaso. The people of Kano turned out in large numbers to entrust the NNPP with power through Kwankwaso’s leadership,” Johnson said.

He recalled that the party contested the election without an established political structure in the state, yet secured victory through grassroots support.

“We had no councillors and no local government chairmen, yet the people voted for the NNPP from the ground up. They stood by Abba Kabir Yusuf through the tribunal, the Court of Appeal, and up to the Supreme Court,” he added.

Johnson argued that Yusuf’s defection, carried out without consulting the electorate, amounted to a disregard for the mandate freely given by the people.

According to him, returning power to the same party that voters rejected after eight years, without seeking public consent, represents a fundamental breach of trust.

Yusuf Defection Rumours Rekindle Kano Emirate Tensions

Speculation over a possible defection of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reignited concerns around the unresolved Kano emirate crisis involving Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Aminu Ado Bayero.

Political observers say the rumoured move could further destabilise the already fragile balance between tradition and politics in Kano, where the prolonged emirship dispute has remained a source of tension since 2020.

Reports indicate that Yusuf recently held a closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, a development believed to be linked to his alleged plans to defect to the ruling party after several postponements.

The emirate crisis began under former governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who dethroned Sanusi in 2020 and installed Bayero following the creation of additional emirates. When Yusuf assumed office in 2023, his administration repealed the law, restored the single emirate structure, and reinstated Sanusi, while Bayero was asked to vacate the palace.

Bayero, however, rejected the decision and relocated to the Nassarawa mini palace under heavy security, challenging his removal in court. In March, the Court of Appeal advised all parties to maintain the status quo pending a Supreme Court ruling, leaving the matter unresolved.

Analysts warn that Yusuf’s alleged defection could weaken Sanusi’s position, particularly if political alignments between the state and federal governments shift. Supporters of Bayero view the development as a possible opening for renewed legal and political efforts to reclaim the throne.

Speaking on Arise Television, political analyst Sumner Sambo cautioned that a defection could deepen the crisis and pose security risks, noting that Sanusi currently lacks formal police protection. He warned that any attempt to reinstate Bayero could spark unrest in the state.

Another analyst, Nduka Odo of Peaceland University, Enugu, said the fate of the rival emirs largely depends on political relationships rather than institutional safeguards, describing the situation as evidence of systemic failure. He criticised the judiciary for not conclusively resolving the dispute.

Similarly, civil rights advocate Olu Omotayo blamed the prolonged crisis on judicial delays, describing the existence of two emirs as an abnormality that undermines governance and security in Kano.

As uncertainty persists, observers caution that any political realignment ahead of the 2027 elections could further inflame tensions unless the courts decisively resolve the emirship dispute.

Kwankwaso did not congratulate Tinubu — NNPP

The New Nigeria Peoples Party on Tuesday described as untrue reports that its presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, congratulated the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, of the All Progressive Congress.

The NNPP in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Agbo Major, said the presidential election was “grossly flawed, contentious and disputed.”

He said, “The report that Engr. Kwankwaso congratulated Tinubu was a figment of the fertile imagination of anti-democrats, political hirelings and fifth columnists leveraging on the popularity of the party’s presidential flag bearer.

“The NNPP rejects the outcome of the February 25 presidential election as it did not reflect the will, wish and mandate of the Nigerians who trooped out to vote but were disappointed by the failure of INEC to conduct credible and transparent elections and fulfil its promise to upload the polling units results to its portals which would have guaranteed the authenticity of the results and declaration of the winner of the presidential election.

“Sadly, the presidential poll turned out to be a charade as it failed to meet the expectation of Nigerians and the international community. NNPP was a target of these electoral robbers who wanted the status quo to remain, in place of the new and better Nigeria the party promised if voted into office.

“It is unthinkable that Kwankwaso would hastily congratulate Asiwaju Tinubu on his questionable mandate which other candidates also claimed they won and had approached the court to seek redress. All lovers of democracy, due process and rule of law will wait for the determination of the election petition in court.

“Until the court decides them one way or the other, it will be preposterous for NNPP that was rigged out in most of its strongholds across the country to concede defeat and congratulate INEC’s imposed ‘winner’.

“The mood of the nation since the electoral body mischievously declared Tinubu the ‘winner’ of the election clearly showed that it was justice juxtaposed, absolutely unacceptable to majority of Nigerians who desire and deserve a new Nigeria which only the NNPP can usher in March 11 is another date with destiny as Nigerians go to the polls to choose their governors and state legislators.

“It is yet another opportunity to vote for NNPP candidates for a better, greater and prosperous Nigeria. Join us to make it happen and experience a better life.”

Kwara NNPP guber candidate promises realistic political, economic reforms

Prof. Oba Abdulraheem, the Kwara’s New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) governorship candidate has promised to embark on realistic, dynamic political and economic reforms if voted into power.

Oba who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said he would create a governable environment that promotes and supports socio-economic well-being of the people through his Strategic Actions to Change Kwara (SACK) strategy.

“We want a Kwara State that works for all, propped by a determined focus on shared prosperity for all, driven by a vibrant economy and underpinned by quality service based on equity and justice.

“The ultimate goal of Government and Governance is the welfare and security of the people,” the governorship candidate said.

He said his government would pursue vigorous value-orientation to minimise corrupt practices, reduce and, ultimately, eliminate waste and leakages ìn public financing.

Explaining his education agenda, Oba who was a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, said there would be a deliberate focus on educational infrastructural renewal, arresting and reversing the decay at the basic education level.

He added that there would be unhindered access to free, qualitative basic education for all in Kwara.

“There will be drastic reduction in out-of-school children population; progressive decongestion and expansion of instructional space and facilities, promoting ICT and e-learning.

“I will embark on capacity-building through re-conceptualizing the teacher training education in order to match the goals of the Universal Basic Education.

“There will be improved conditions/incentives for trainee teachers, restoration of rural posting and incentives for basic education teachers,” he said.

Oba said the professional focus of the colleges of Education and polytechnics would remain sacrosanct, while there there would be enhanced conditions of service, including career opportunities for trained teachers.

According to the NNPP governorship candidate, education is a change-agent which will be deployed as the flagship of his party’s change agenda.

2023: Kwara Hausa/Fulani community adopts NNPP guber candidate

The Hausa/Fulani Community at Ajase-Ipo in Kwara has adopted Prof. Oba AbdulRaheem, the Governorship candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), in the upcoming general elections.

The leader of the Hausa/Fulani community in Kwara, Alhaji Shehu Garba, made this known while receiving AbdulRaheem during a campaign tour to the area on Monday.

Garba lamented that successive administrations in the state had failed to add any value to their lives.

“We ask for the Ajase-Ipo Kara market be fenced, they didn’t do it. We left the ruling party because the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not doing well and we are fully in support of NNPP now.

“They are not paying us, we are spending our money, yet no support from them.

“I’m Seriki (the leader of the community) and I have not received a kobo since over 20 years that I have been in the position.

“We have no water, no school, no support from the government at all, we built our Palace and mosque with our own money.”

According to him, the community had resolved to support NNPP, saying they wouldn’t have received APC or PDP the way they did to AbdulRaheem.

Addressing the community earlier as part of his campaign tour to Irepodun Local Government Area of the state, AbdulRaheem promised to make the Ajase-Ipo Kara market more habitable, if elected.

He said he won’t neglect the Hausa/Fulani community in Kwara, assuring them that he will not steal public funds like his predecessors.

The former Vice Chancellor of University of Ilorin also promised to construct a security fence for the market as requested by the community.

Abdulraheem, the Talba of Ilorin, thanked them for supporting the party and urged them to vote for all the NNPP candidates from the President to the state House of Assembly. (NAN) (www.nannews.

No crisis in Ondo NNPP – Chairman

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Ondo State has debunked alleged crisis within it in the state.

The party’s reaction is coming on the heels of publications in which some people who claimed to be leaders of the NNPP in Ondo state, alleged division in the party.

Addressing a news conference on Tuesday at the party’s secretariat in Akure, Pastor Peter Olagookun, the NNPP Chairman in the state said the allegation was false.

“Some group of people who had claimed to be members of the NNPP, had given wrong signal of crisis in the party to the public.

“The attention of NNPP Ondo state has been drawn to publications that some group of impostors are using the name of the party to politically dupe the consciousness of the public.

“However, we want the general public to know that there is no crisis in our great party in Ondo state.

“We suspect that the claim emanated from suspended members of the party and their cohorts who were involved in anti-party activities and who have been suspended,’’ he said.

According to him, the party is not blind to the fact that a lot of unpatriotic political games will be on at this crucial point.

“They are now being sponsored by a political party which they now belong to, to destabilise the fast growing structure of the NNPP in Ondo state.

“I enjoin all party members and lovers of our great party to maintain law and order, stay focused and prepare ahead for the forthcoming general elections,” he said.

Olagookun said the NNPP remained a law abiding political party, “one which respects and obeys diligently, the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We shall do everything humanly possible according to the law to ensure that our Presidential Candidate, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso and all our candidates emerge winner in the 2023 general elections,” he said.

Also speaking, the National Deputy Welfare Secretary of the party, Chief Fatai Batolu, said the state leadership of the party under the chairmanship of Olagookun remained in good shape and law abiding in tandem with the constitution of the NNPP.

Batolu advised the public to disregard the alleged division, saying it was dead on arrival.

He added that the party’s focus was to win the 2023 polls convincingly.

“NNPP Ondo state is focused and will never be distracted from winning the 2023 general elections in grand style,” he added.
