    Nigeria Open to Investment, Tinubu Tells Türkiyeb

    President Bola Tinubu has said Nigeria and Türkiye have agreed to fast-track cooperation in trade, energy and defence as part of efforts to boost job creation, investment and shared prosperity between both countries.

    The President disclosed this on Tuesday via his official X handle during his ongoing state visit to Ankara, where he held bilateral talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

    According to Tinubu, discussions focused on deepening bilateral relations and delivering tangible economic benefits to citizens of both nations.

    “President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and I reaffirmed our shared ambition, which speaks directly to jobs, investment and opportunity for our people,” Tinubu said.

    He revealed that both leaders agreed to expand trade volumes and dismantle structural barriers hindering business growth, with a clear target of increasing bilateral trade to five billion dollars.

    “We are creating a clear pathway to a five-billion-dollar trade volume between Nigeria and Türkiye,” the President stated.

    Tinubu described the talks as practical and forward-looking, covering key areas such as trade and investment, energy, education, defence cooperation, peace and security.

    He announced the establishment of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee to drive implementation of agreements and attract fresh investments.

    “The creation of a Joint Economy and Trade Committee will unlock new flows of capital,” Tinubu said, adding that the body would support industrial growth, technology transfer and stronger private-sector participation.

    The President welcomed President Erdoğan’s acknowledgement of Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, particularly in the energy and investment sectors, noting that the recognition reflects growing confidence in Nigeria’s reform agenda.

    “We are determined to build an economy that works for everyone, including the most vulnerable,” he said.

    On regional security, Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to peace and stability across Africa, while highlighting Türkiye’s experience in counter-terrorism and defence cooperation.

    “Türkiye’s experience and readiness to cooperate in training, intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism strengthen our resolve,” he said.

    At the end of the meeting, nine bilateral agreements were exchanged, covering defence, education, media cooperation, diaspora policy, trade facilitation, social development and institutional collaboration.

    Tinubu reiterated that Nigeria remains open to serious partnerships and committed to inclusive growth, peaceful coexistence and active global engagement.

    Nigeria, Türkiye Sign Deals, Expand Security Cooperation

    Nigeria and Türkiye have agreed to pursue a $5 billion bilateral trade target while strengthening cooperation on security, energy and defence, following high-level talks between Presidents Bola Tinubu and Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara.

    Speaking at a joint press briefing during President Tinubu’s state visit, President Erdogan reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to expanding trade relations, noting that both countries had begun discussions on frameworks to drive investment and commercial growth.

    He announced plans to establish a Joint Economy and Trade Committee, describing it as a key mechanism for supporting Turkish investments in Nigeria and accelerating progress toward the $5 billion trade goal. Current trade volume between both countries stands at about $2 billion.

    Erdogan also commended Tinubu’s economic reforms, particularly in the energy sector, and expressed optimism that cooperation between Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Nigerian partners would yield tangible outcomes.

    On security, the Turkish president pledged support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, especially in the Sahel region. He said both leaders discussed deeper collaboration in military training, intelligence sharing and defence manufacturing, with Türkiye ready to share its counter-terrorism experience.

    President Tinubu, in his remarks, welcomed Türkiye’s willingness to strengthen economic and security ties, stressing the need for inclusive growth that benefits vulnerable populations. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional stability and joint efforts to counter terrorism and other threats.

    The leaders also exchanged nine bilateral agreements covering defence cooperation, diaspora policy, education, media and communication, social development, and the formal establishment of the joint economy and trade committee.

    Türkiye currently exports machinery, aircraft, iron and steel, and chemical products to Nigeria, while Nigeria exports crude oil and agricultural commodities.

    Meanwhile, Presidential Adviser on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, described Tinubu’s visit as strategic, saying it reflects Nigeria’s growing diplomatic influence and renewed engagement with global partners under the current administration.

    The Presidency also dismissed reports surrounding the president’s brief stumble during a reception in Ankara, describing it as a minor incident that did not affect his schedule or health.
