    The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has said that the institution operates the most responsible trade unionism in Nigeria, which solidifies its status as the preferred choice for stakeholders, including prospective students and their parents and guardians.

    Prof. Egbewole, stated this last Thursday while declaring open the Zonal Executive Council (ZEC) meeting of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) held at the University’s Main Auditorium.

    The Vice Chancellor explained that the focus of union leaders should be the welfare of their members and they should always encourage management to make it a top priority.

    Prof. Egbewole explained that the acceptance of that fact has been the factor that ensured that all the unions operating at the University of Ilorin such as the Senior Staff Association of Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union(NASU), the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT), and management of the University are on the same page.
    The Vice Chancellor, who noted the importance of constructive collaboration between union leaders and management for the benefit of the University’s staff, pledged that his administration will continue to welcome constructive criticism for the benefit of all.

    Prof. Egbewole, however, appealed to various union leaders who attended the meeting to continually guide their members towards responsible conduct within their respective institutions.
    While also identifying students as a critical stakeholder in the University system, the UNILORIN Vice Chancellor urged all University staff to recognise students as crucial stakeholders and accord them the deserving respect.

    Prof. Egbewole advocated responsible interaction with the students to foster an environment that instills pride in their alma mater, which in return would encourage the students to contribute positively to the growth and development of their respective universities.

    In a related development, the National President of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Comrade Mohammed H. Ibrahim, has bestowed the title of honorary member on the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN.

    The investiture ceremony of the Vice Chancellor took place during a courtesy visit by the SSANU President in his office.
    Comrade Ibrahim expressed the Union’s admiration for Prof. Egbewole’s exemplary leadership styles and noteworthy contributions to the academic community.

    Speaking further, the SSANU leader highlighted the University of Ilorin’s outstanding performance, citing consistent commendable reports received at the national secretariat of the Union about the University.

    He emphasised that the institution, under the administration of Prof. Egbewole, has become a role model for other universities in Nigeria.

    He added that the conferment of the honorary membership of SSANU on Prof. Egbewole is not only informed by his personal accomplishments but also confirmed the effectiveness of the collaborations between the University of Ilorin and SSANU.

    The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, has felicitated with a foremost medical practitioner and politician, Prof. Wale Sulaiman, on his appointment as the pioneer Pro-Chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun, Osun State.

    This is contained in a statement issued in Ilorin by the Director, Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun.

    Egbewole described the appointment of the renowned Neurosurgeon as apt and well deserved, saying it will facilitate the progress of the university and medical training in Nigeria.

    The vice chancellor noted that the appointment is an instance of a marriage between the ivory tower and relevant professionals.

    Egbewole added that he was particularly happy as Sulaiman would be working with products of the Unilorin such as the Registrar of the institution, Mr Kassim Babamale, and the Provost of the university’s College of Medicine, Prof. Aishatu Gobir, among others, who are already working at the new university.

    According to him, President Muhammadu Buhari made a better choice of Council Chairman for the new institution, adding that Sulaiman is sufficiently equipped with what is required to stimulate the progress of the institution.

    “I congratulate you on your new appointment. You are simply the best choice to lead this institution to a new height. Use this appointment to prove your mettle,” he advised.

    Egbewole also urged the new Suleiman to deploy his vast knowledge, experience and contacts to assist the new institution in attracting the best in terms of human and material resources for it to achieve its corporate objectives.

    The vice chancellor wished the new chairman a very fruitful and peaceful tenure of office.

    The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has felicitated with the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman, Kwara State Council of Chiefs, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, CFR, and two other First Class monarchs in the state on various monumental milestones recorded by each of them recently.

    While the Emir was recently appointed the Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, the Olofa of Offa, Oba Mufutau Gbadamosi, marked his 13th anniversary on the throne of his forefathers just as the Elese of Igbaja, Oba Amodu Babalola Awuni Arepo II, clocked 34 years on the throne.

    In a statement signed by the Director of Corporate Affairs, University of Ilorin, Mr Kunle Akogun, the Vice Chancellor congratulated the Emir on his appointment as the Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, which he described as a sister second generation university that was established at the same time with the University of Ilorin.

    Prof. Egbewole said that the appointment of the Emir of Ilorin, as the Chancellor of the Bayero University, Kano, is timely and well deserved.

    The Professor of Jurisprudence and International Law described Bayero University, Kano, as an institution that shares very close affinity with the University of Ilorin, recalling that it was from the University that Prof. Shuaibu Oba AbdulRaheem, OFR, was appointed as UNILORIN’s 6th Vice Chancellor, while two of UNILORIN’s Principal Officers, the Registrar, Mr Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, and the University Librarian, Dr Kamal Tunde Omopupa, were also groomed at Bayero University.

    The Vice Chancellor explained that members of the University of Ilorin community are very optimistic that the Emir would advance the cause of Bayero University and the nation’s educational system in general during his Chancellorship tenure.

    Prof. Egbewole also congratulated the Olofa of Offa on the 13th anniversary of his coronation, saying that the reign of the monarch has been very peaceful and so prosperous that it has witnessed the establishment of two universities in the ancient town.

    The Vice Chancellor described the Olofa as a generous leader and a wonderful royal father who had never hidden his love for the University of Ilorin before and since his enthronement in 2010.

    Prof. Egbewole similarly rejoiced with the Elese of Igbaja, on the 34th anniversary of his peaceful reign over his people.

    He said that the Kabiesi’s reign had brought monumental development to Igbaja and environs in the last 34 years.

    The Vice Chancellor wished the three foremost royal fathers many more years of peaceful and eventful reigns on the thrones of their illustrious progenitors.

    Prof. Wahab Egbewole, the Vice Chancellor, University of Ilorin (Unilorin), has expressed optimism that the new Regiatrar of the institution, Mr Mansur Alfanla, would deliver on his mandate on the development of the university.

    Egbewole said this on Saturday at the university in his welcome address at the felicitation and inauguration of the new Registrar (Alfanla) to his office.

    According to him, he has no doubt that the registrar is able and capable to deliver on his mandate.

    He described Alfanla as a good product of the university who does not need advertisement.

    Egbewole thanked Allah for the seamless process that produced the new registrar, saying a process that used to cause disagreement, friction in other institutions is what God made it easier at Unilorin.

    He also paid homage to the immediate past registrar, Dr Folaranmi Olowoleni, for her selfless service to the university.

    Egbewole observed Alfanla would continue to leverage on his predecessor’s experience and join the crusade to make Unilorin one of the best in the world.

    Mr Emmanuel Obafemi, a former registrar of Unilorin, advised Alfanla to add value to the university and work in tandem with the vice chancellor for the development of the institution.

    Obafemi added that the mandate of the regiatrar is to guide the day to day running of the university, while urging members of staff to be loyal and supportive of Alfanla in achieving success.

    He therefore advised him on efficiency, effectiveness and functional leadership in his duty.

    In his appreciative remark, Alfanla pledges to support the vice chancellor for the upliftment of the varsity.

    He described the vice chancellor as wonderful and supportive and looking forward for a fruitful tenure with Egbewole.

    Prof. Wahab Egbewole (SAN), the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), says the institution is engaging with Chinese embassy and other embassies to provide metro railway transportation system to the university.

    Egbewole disclosed this on Wednesday while fielding questions from newsmen during the Vice-Chancellor’s Maiden Media Parley.

    He explained that thousands of staff and students of the university are commuting to and fro, adding that the transportation of such large numbers can be challenging.

    He added that the metro railway train will be specifically designed to run in the institution and the other metropolitan city.

    According to him, exploring the plan for possible railway metro transportation had been in the process for years, and that Unilorin is also working on getting electricity buses to address the transportation problem.

    Egbewole believed that this is a market that can be tapped, and that with this development, it will ease the movement of students and staff to the university environment.

    The vice chancellor who was appointed 109 days ago as the 11th VC of Unilorin, disclosed that N500 million was released to the institution by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (Tetfund) for the construction of hostels for the students.

    He explained that the Memorandum of Understanding was signed with some foreign universities to further improve learning and research in the institution.

    While promising to turn the institution to a Smart University, the vice chancellor noted that Unilorin is partnering with industries on turning academic researches to industrial use.

    “We are remodeling the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to ensure ventures are run like business.

    “We will ensure that the IGR are properly managed by blocking all loopholes,” he said.

    The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has been elected the pioneer Chairman of the newly formed consortium of all universities in Kwara State, called “Ku8”.

    The group was formed to create inter-university relationships among all the universities in Kwara State that would ensure great academic strive in all the universities through knowledge sharing.

    Prof. Egbewole’s emergence was announced during the maiden meeting of the body, held at the University of Ilorin and attended by six Vice Chancellors of the member universities and representatives of two others.

    ROTAL NEWS reports that other Vice Chancellors in attendance that equally made contributions and brilliant suggestions included those of Landmark University, Prof. Charity Onye Aremu; Crown-Hill University, who was represented by Prof Jeleel Ojuade; Thomas Adewumi University, Prof. Francisca Oladipo ; and Prof. Abiodun Musa Aibinu of Summit University.

    Universities that formed the KU8 consortium are the University of Ilorin (established in 1975), Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin (established in 2005), the Kwara State University, Malete (established in 2009), Landmark University, Omu-Aran (established in 2011), Summit University, Offa (established in 2015), Crown-Hill University, Ilorin (established in 2016), Ahman Patigi University, Patigi (established in 2021); Thomas Adewumi University, Oko (established in 2021), and the University of Offa, Offa (established in 2021).

    Other officers of the KU8 are the Vice Chancellor of Thomas Adewumi University, Oko, Prof. Francisca Oladipo, General Secretary; and the Vice Chancellor of Landmark University, Omu Aran, Prof. Charity Onye Aremu, Treasurer.

    In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, who is also the convener of the meeting, Prof. Egbewole, said that the idea of ‘The KU8 Initiative’ was to promote functional academic linkages and institutional collaboration for the attainment of effective delivery of the core mandate of teaching, research and community service among the member universities.

    According to Prof. Egbewole, “The purpose of KU8 (or eight Universities in Kwara State) is mainly to develop closer relationships, promote academic linkages and establish institutional collaboration, which will allow joint activities in delivering the universities’ mandates of teaching, research and community service”

    The Vice Chancellor said, “This is necessary too to avoid one of the ironies of today’s world in which human beings are so advanced that we go to the moon but we are so backward to visit or assist our neighbour. The essence is to pursue the global without compromising the local because ultimately, all development permeates from the rear.

    “The crux of this meeting aligns with the operational philosophy that I champion. I told the Senate of the University of Ilorin in my inaugural address, titled, “Together Everyone Achieves More”, that TEAM is just an acronym depicting that. As unity is strength and we cannot clap with a hand, we can support one another to overcome challenges and deepen the training of our teeming young ones. A broom sweeps only when the individual broomsticks come together and work together. The University of Ilorin extends its hands of fellowship to all Kwara universities as it looks forward to a future where members of the KU8 will be emerging the best in several areas”.

    Prof. Egbewole said, “As a university strategically located in the cultural confluence of Nigeria, we have realised that unity is strength and united we stand, divided they fall. It is our philosophy that with cooperation, coordination, collaboration, interaction, and networking, we can only be stronger. Today’s meeting is in furtherance of that philosophy.”

    According to him, the need for closer interaction is even more compelling this time because the Nigerian university system through the National Universities Commission (NUC) is deploying the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS) which requires the development of a percentage (30%) of the curriculum by the institutions.

    Speaking earlier at the opening ceremony of the meeting, the Ag. Vice Chancellor of the Kwara State University (KWASU), Prof. Shaykh Luqman Jimoh, commended the convener of the KU8 for coming up with such a brilliant initiative, adding that it will be very useful and supportive not only to member universities but also to the society in general.

    Prof. Jimoh disclosed that the late Vice Chancellor of KWASU, Prof. Muhammed Mustapha Akanbi, SAN, had earlier initiated a robust collaboration with the University of Maiduguri and the Borno State University, adding that he was also keen on bringing all universities in Kwara State under one umbrella, but he thanked God that Prof. Akanbi’s desire has now come to pass with the formation of KU8.

    In their separate comments at the meeting, the Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Prof. Noah Yusuf; and the Vice Chancellor of Ahman Patigi University, Prof. Mahfouz Adedimeji, described the formation of KU8 as a step in a right direction and expressed optimism that the initiative would bear fruitful results.

    The governing council of the University of Ilorin has announced Professor Wahab Egbewole (SAN) as the new Vice Chancellor of the institution.

    ROYAL NEWS reports that the varsity don, a Professor of Law succeeds Professor Sulyman Age Abdulkareem whose tenure will expire in October 2022.

    The announcement was done by the Chairman Governing Council of the University, Mallam Habidu Yazid Rafindadi.
