Roger Federer: survives Tiafoe scare in US Open

Tennis great Roger Federer survived a scare by American young talent, Frances Tiafoe in the first round of US Open, battling through five sets to clinch victory.

Tiafoe, who beat World number one, Rafael Nadal in Cincinnati two weeks ago, shocked Federer when he took the first set 6-4.

Federer fought back to take the next two sets 6-2 6-1. Tiafoe latching on erratic play by Federer took the fourth set 6-1, forcing a fifth set decider.

Federer raced to a 4-1 lead in the set, but Tiafoe clawed back to narrow the lead to 4-5, breaking Federer when he was serving to close the match at 5-3.

The drama of the night ended when Federer broke Tiafoe back, closing the match 6-4.
