Unknown gunmen have intensified their nefarious activities in Anambra State leaving tales of woe on their tracts.

The people of industrial town of Nnewi was jolted to their marrow when news filtered in that Chief Gab Ofoma has fallen to the bullets of the rampaging killers.

Chief Ofoma (Ojemba Enweilo Nnewi) Chairman/CEO of Ofoma Associates Ltd was allegedly gunned down in cold blood along Ukpor-Lilu-Orsumoghu-Azia road as his driver made a detour from Onitsha-Owerri Highway enroute Portharcourt, due to traffic jam on the expressway.

Chief Ofoma was an illustrious son of Igboland, he was also a trailblazer in his professional field of Estate Surveying and Management.

The old boy of Oraukwu Grammar School was said to have over one hundred and fifty personnel under his employ in his offices in Portharcourt (Hqts), Abuja, Lagos and Nnewi.

The Presiding Justice of the Court of Appeal, while traveling to Owerri from Benin City, was kidnapped along the same route, Azia-Orsumoghu-Ihiala Road by Kidnappers same day.

Hon. Justice Pemu, who was said to be in her Hiace Bus instead of her SUV and was dressed in a simple, spartan and free-flowing gown was mistaken by the Kidnappers as one of “oga’s stewards,” as they kept demanding to know in which car their “oga” was.

She was allegedly matched into a thick forest, one of the Kidnappers like a death-destined sheep to the slaughter, gun shots and concomitant cries of anguish pervaded the bush, which heightened her apprehension.

“As the Kidnappers backed out for his Lordship to continue the Golgotha walk into the depth of the bush, where perhaps she would face the doomed fate of others, she detoured and took safety elsewhere, and was hurried back to Orlu town in disguise from where she found her way into Owerri.

“As at the time of this report, His Lordship’s official cars, her Driver, her personal property inside the car are yet to be found,” Chinedu Agu, Secretary NBA Owerri insisted.

Also, a commissioners in Enugu State narrowly escaped the attack of the gunmen on the same route but his two security attaché, a police inspector and a sergeant were allegedly abducted by their attackers.

The same day, motorists and residents had to scamper for safety at Umuoji along Nnobi Nkpor road as unknown gunmen allegedly attempted to snatch a car, in the course of doing that, two men who they have successfully abducted escaped.

Sources claimed that the rampaging killers became so furious and started shooting at anything in sight. A lady who was kidnapped along side the two men who escaped was not lucky as she was killed.

Gunshots were constantly heard in Nnewi, Nnobi, Awka-Etiti, Ekwulobia, Oko, Nkpor and other places in the state.

The incessant snatching of cars and killings in the state has led to tension as people now go about their normal daily activities in fear and apprehension.

A number of respondents who spoke with our staff reporter on the condition of anonymity expressed disbelief that Anambra State which was reputed to be safest state in Nigeria has suddenly become a butcher slab where people are killed without any form of provocation.

A businessman said that he is making arrangements to relocate his family out of Anambra State for security reasons. He said he was considering Asaba in Delta State, PortHarcout in Rivers State and Lagos.

“It is not an easy decision for me but I have to move. I have always been doing my business here at home and God has blessed me but with the level of abductions and killings going on now in the state, it would be suicidal to continue to stay here.” He stressed.

Another respondent blamed the ugly development on security checkpoints mounted by policemen and other agencies where people spend hours as a result of holdup.

He said rather than subjecting motorists to untold hardship through their ineffective checkpoints, security agencies should consider motorized patrol of the black spots where the unknown gunmen operate with all bravado.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Anambra State command, Tochukwu Ikenga (DSP) when contacted said that combined security agencies are on the trail of the unknown gunmen.
