UBA donates N5bn to African countries to fight Covid-19

The sum of five billion Naira (N5,000,000,000) have been donated to countries across Africa by the United Bank For Africa Plc (UBA) to fight against coronavirus pandemic in the region.

Further checks revealed that out of the total donation, the sum of N2.5 billion is for Nigeria as contained in statement signed by UBA’s Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, on Thursday.

He said: “the private sector has to work with various governments, in curbing the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic. This is a time when we must all play our part; this global pandemic must bring citizens, governments and business leaders together and quickly.

“The sum of N1 billion goes to the Lagos State government, another N1 billion would go to the remaining 35 states in Nigeria; while N500 million is donated to the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.”

The statement also added that the remaining 2.5 billion( 7 million U.S. dollars) would go to African countries with UBA’s presence and for supplies of medical equipment and facility.

He further said that the bank, among other things, would also fund a medical center in Lagos, providing some beds for isolation and other medical gadgets in partnership with Avon Medical Hospital, a subsidiary of Heirs Holdings healthcare.
