UNILORIN, a pride to all----Arowona

A prominent journalist and Shettima of Okuta in the Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, Mr AbdulAzeez Olalekan Arowona,has commended the University of Ilorin for the several roles it has played in the promotion of human ¡capital development since its establishment,saying that there is no where across the world that the products of the University would not be seen doing well.

Mr Arowona stated this last Tuesday (October 11,2022) while featuring on Oro To Nlo,a current affairs programme of UNILORIN 89.3 FM,the official radio station of the University of Ilorin.The programme was anchored by the Head of the Station, Mr Idris Akintola Ibrahim(Alooma)

The renowned journalist,who was the Chairman of the Organising Committee for the 2022 Press Week of the Kwara State Chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists(NUJ), said that the University is, no doubt,one of the most outstanding in Nigeria.

He added that the University is a great institution offering several academic courses and with students and lecturers and other categories of staff from the different cultures and background which afford products of the University exposure to multidimensional cultures.

Mr Arowona also commended the University for the establishment of the UNILORIN 89.3 FM which he said had not only been bridging communication gaps between the government and governed as well as between the University and its relevant publics but also providing adequate support for the training of journalists and media professionals.

Mr Arowona, who is also the Press Secretary to the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari,CFR, was full of praises for a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Is-haq Olanrewaju Oloyede,OFR,CON; for always doing the institution proud every where he served which eventuated in the award of the national honour of the Commander of the Order of the Niger(CON) by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He urged other institutions of higher learning to emulate the wonderful dispositions of the University of Ilorin for them to also live up to expectations in term of service delivery for them to also produced the likes of achievers like Prof. Oloyede.

Speaking on the International Day for Girl Child ,which fell on the same date, Mr Arowona urged stakeholders to give greater consideration to the education of girls in order to ensure greater global human capital development.

Mr Arowona explained that it was important for the female folks to be thoroughly educated because of the significance of women in our society.

He added that gone were the days when the education of girls end in the kitchen as he said that the more educated women are the better for the nation and humanity.

Mr Arowona said that there is no level or position that well educated women cannot achieve in contemporary world as he cited the cases of the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Mrs Amina Mohammed; a former Ag.Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria,Mrs Serah Alade and the new Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure,Prof. Adenike Oladiji, Registrar of UNILORIN,  Drs (Mrs) Olowoleni among others to buttress his point.

Mr Arowona decried the practice of child labour particularly among girls. He said that the practice was wrong and must be checked as it posed serious challenges to the well being and future of the girls who are involved in child labour particularly street trading.

The foremost journalist, who is an alumnus of the University, also canvassed for specific roles for the traditional rulers,saying that the growing insecurity facing the nation could be effectively tacked if traditional rulers were empowered by the laws of the land to do.

He added that the constitutional empowerment of the traditional rulers would certainly reduce the magnitude of ungoverned areas in the country as there is no where that is not under the authority of one traditional ruler or the other who are however powerless.
