UNILORIN gets full accreditation for Pharmacy, Vet Medicine Programmes

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has given full accreditation to the Pharmacy and Veterinary Medicine programmes of the University of Ilorin.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, who disclosed while speaking at the 258th Meeting of the University Senate, explained that this was the outcome of the 2016 accreditation exercise carried out by the NUC to the University in August last year.

Prof. Ambali added that apart from the two Faculties, seven other Departmental programmes also got full accreditation. According to him, these are: Forestry and Wildlife in the Faculty of Agriculture; Business Education, Agriculture Education and Social Studies in the Faculty of Education; Water Resources Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology; Quantity Surveying and Urban and Regional Planning in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, four other programmes were given interim accreditation. These are: Marketing in the Faculty of Administration; Material and Meteorological Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering and Technology; as well as Architecture and Surveying and Geo-Informatics in the Faculty of Environmental Science.

The NUC, however, denied accreditation to two programmes – Social Works and Psychology – in the Faculty of Social Science.

On the implications of the accreditation status earned by respective academic programmes, the NUC explained that full accreditation status is valid for a period of five years.

The Commission added that “interim accreditation status is valid for two years after which the programme will be re-visited”.

Meanwhile, the results of the recent re-accreditation exercise for more academic programmes in the University are still being awaited.

Among the programmes, whose re-accreditation exercises were carried out between November 28, 2016 and December 5, 2016, are: Accounting, Business Administration, Agriculture, Food Science, Home Economics, Arabic and Islamic Studies, Christian Religious Studies, Comparative Religious Studies, English Language, Linguistics and Nigerian Languages, the Performing Arts, as well as History and International Studies.

Other academic programmes on which re-accreditation results are still being awaited include French, Yoruba, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering, Political Science, Mass Communication, Law, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, and Geology.
