UNILORIN VC approves promotion of 1, 019 staff

No fewer than 1,019 staff members have been promoted by the authority of the University of Ilorin, ROYAL NEWS reports.

Findings revealed that the promotion exercise as approved by the Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, is the highest ever in a single exercise since its establishment 43 years ago.

The promotion, which cuts across all cadres of the University’s workforce, was the outcome of the 162nd Meeting of the Appointment and Promotion Committee for senior staff and the 83rd Meeting of the Junior Staff Appointments and Promotions Committee held on September 10, 2018 and August 3, 2018 respectively.

According to information made available to Unilorin Bulletin last week, those promoted include 248 academic staff, 132 Registry staff, 287 professional and technical staff, 26 staff of the University Staff School and 326 junior staff.

Of the 248 academic staff promoted, 49 were lifted to the Professorial cadre while 31 became Readers (Associate Professors). Also, 41 were promoted from the rank of Lecturer I to Senior Lecturer; 61 of them advanced from Lecturer II to Lecturer I while 66 were promoted from the rank of Assistant Lecturer to Lecturer II.

The Faculties of Clinical Sciences and Communication and Information Sciences (CIS) took the lead in the number of new Senior Lecturers with seven each while the staff of the Faculties of Life Science, Education and Arts dominated those that moved from Lecturer II to Lecturer I cadre with 14, 12 and eight respectively. With 16, 10 and nine new Lecturer II staff respectively, the Faculties of Education, Arts and Physical Sciences dominated those that moved from Assistant Lecturer to Lecturer II.

In the Administrative cadre, the University now has five additional Deputy Registrars (DRs), who were elevated from their previous positions of Principal Assistant Registrar as well as three new Deputy Directors. The new DRs are Mrs B.O. Ishola of the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Miss O. Hudson of the Institute of Education; Mr. K.K. Babamale of the Postgraduate School; Mr. T.A. Bamigboye of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Mrs. B.A. Sa’adu of the Unilorin Resource Development and Management Board (URDMB).

The new Deputy Directors are Dr. R.A. Tomori of the Computer Services and Information Technology Unit (COMSIT), Engr. R.K. Amoo, and Engr. (Mrs.) A.M. Abidoye of the Works Department.

Also in the Registry, six Senior Assistant Registrars were promoted to the position of Principal Assistant Registrars and nine Assistant Registrars moved up the ladder to become Senior Assistant Registrars. Seventeen Administrative Officers were promoted to Assistant Registrars while 16 Administrative Assistants also advanced to the position of Administrative Officers.

Similarly in the Executive cadre, Mr. P.K. Bamidele, of the University’s Lagos Liaison Office, who was an Asst. Chief Executive Officer was promoted Chief Executive Officer; four other staff members were promoted from Principal Executive Officers I to Asst. Chief Executive Officers while one Senior Executive Officer was promoted Principal Executive Officer II. Furthermore, 30 Higher Executive Officers moved on to become Senior Executive Officers and three Executive Officers also moved to Higher Executive Officers.

In the Directorate of Corporate Affairs, two staff members were promoted Assistant Directors from the positions of Principal Information Officer and Principal Protocol Officer while one person moved from Senior Information Officer to Principal Information Officer. Also, three staff moved from Information Officer 1 to become Senior Information Officers while one Protocol Officer was promoted Senior Protocol Officer. Seven staff members were also moved up from Information Officer II to Information Officer I.

In the Secretarial cadre, one Asst. Chief Confidential Secretary was promoted Chief Confidential Secretary. Two Principal Confidential Secretaries I were promoted Asst. Chief Confidential Secretaries; six Principal Confidential Secretaries II were moved to Principal Confidential Secretaries I while three Senior Confidential Secretaries advanced to Principal Confidential Secretaries II.

Also in this category, two staff were promoted from Confidential Secretary I to Senior Confidential Secretaries; six staff members were moved from Confidential Secretary II to Confidential Secretary I; 15 advanced from Senior Secretarial Assistant I to Chief Secretarial Assistant and five moved from Senior Secretarial Assistant II to Senior Secretarial Assistant I.

In the Junior staff category comprising Senior Clerical Officers, Senior Craftsmen, Patrol Supervisors, Drivers, amongst many others that cut across all the Units in the University, 82 advanced from CONTISS 05 to CONTISS 06; another 56, also progressed from CONTISS 04 to CONTISS 05. Furthermore, 101 of them were promoted from CONTISS 03 to CONTISS 04 while another set of 87 junior staff members were equally promoted from CONTISS 02 to CONTISS 03.

There was retrospective consideration of 2015 promotions of 26 staff members of the University Staff School. Four of the beneficiaries were promoted from CONTISS 07 to CONTISS 08; two from CONTISS 08 to CONTISS 09; 15 from CONTISS 09 to CONTISS 10; two from CONTISS 10 to CONTISS 11 and three from CONTISS 11 to CONTISS 12.
