The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin and Chairman of the Association of West African Universities (AWAU), Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, has advised the newly admitted students for the 2016/2017 academic session to abide strictly by the mission and vision of the institution in order to make their stay in the University smooth and fruitful.

ROYAL NEWS reports that Prof. Ambali said this while declaring open a week-long orientation programme for the new intakes at the University Auditorium.

The Vice-Chancellor, who was represented on the occasion by the Director of the Center for International Education (CIE), University of Ilorin, Prof. Muhammed Ibrahim, said understanding the mission and vision of the University would afford the students to tread with caution and follow their studies with keen interest.

Prof. Ambali told the students to remember the children of whom they are and strive hard to attain excellence in the cause of pursuing their degree programmes.

He explained that the University of Ilorin is an institution that cares about giving students sound and qualitative education and urged the new intakes to make themselves available to enjoy, to the fullest, the best the University has in stock for them in terms of the provision of uncommon academic excellence.

While imploring them to keep all University rules and regulations, Prof. Ambali congratulated the students on their luck to have been considered for admission, saying that only very few were that lucky out of the multitudes that sought admission into the better by far institution.

In his address, the Registrar of the institution, Mr Emmanuel Dada Obafemi, urged the students to allow themselves to go through a process of cultural transition and renewal by obeying the University’s codes of conduct, including the dress code.

The Registrar, who titled his speech “The World is Your Oyster”, advised the newly admitted students to exhibit values of good character, honesty, sincerity and uprightness.

Mr. Obafemi, who spoke through the Deputy Registrar (Establishment), Mr M.S. Adegoke, told the students, “You are enjoined to manage your time very well by ensuring that you attend your lectures punctually and read your books and other materials diligently.

You should read the University rules and regulations properly and familiarize yourself with its contents as ignorance of the rules is no excuse for misbehaviour.

“If you behave properly and keep your own part of the bargain, you will discover that this is a student-friendly University that takes adequate care of its students and treats them as friends.”

The Registrar enjoined the students to work hard and put in their best, pointing out that those who work hard will attain high grades and become University scholars and enjoy all the privileges accruing to that accomplishment.

Also speaking on the occasion, Prof. Y. A. Quadri of the Faculty of Arts advised the new students to always dress in accordance with University approved standards, including hair-cuts, saying that “the way you dress is the way you shall be addressed”.

Also speaking at the event, the Chief Medical Officer of the University of Ilorin Health Services, Dr AbdulRasheed Odunola, said that the University invests heavily on provision of medical facilities in order to provide effective health care services to both staff and students.

Dr. Odunola encouraged the new students to make judicious use of the clinic, which, he said, is within their reach, just as he urged them to register with the clinic for them to qualify for treatment.

The Chief Medical Officer disclosed that the University of Ilorin has paid up N2.5 million for the treatment of a student that registered with just N50. He said that the clinic has some referrer centers in case of any complicated issue, pointing out that the University would foot the bill once such a student has registered with the clinic.
