Attentions of Nigerians are heightened as the Federal Government on Friday posted newly appointed Ambassadors and High Commissioners to some strategic countries of particular concerns across the globe, including areas increasingly defined by geopolitical tension and the widening confrontation between the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The posting followed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval of the deployment of 65 Ambassadors and High Commissioners to Nigeria’s Missions globally, comprising both political appointees and career diplomats.
Among the new postings are envoys assigned to locations considered sensitive or strategically tied to the Middle East conflict architecture.
These include diplomatic missions connected to the ongoing war in Israel, Gulf states, and other regions championed by the United States of America.
Analysts noted that such postings are never merely ceremonial; ambassadors stationed to these regions often function as the frontline of intelligence gathering, negotiation, and crisis diplomacy when conflicts escalate.
They are;
1. Hamza Mohammed Salau was posted as Nigeria’s new Ambassador to Iran. The Niger State‑born diplomat will represent Nigeria in Tehran.
2. Ambassador Joseph Sola Iji, Nigerian Ambassador appointed and approved by President Tinubu was posted to Russia. A career diplomat within Nigeria’s foreign service.
Russia is central to the Russia–Ukraine war, making Nigeria’s diplomatic presence there strategically important.The embassy in Moscow handles diplomatic relations with the Russian government economic and military cooperation discussions monitoring geopolitical developments affecting Africa.
The posting is considered politically sensitive because Russia is under Western sanctions due to the Ukraine conflicts.
3. Nkechi linda Ufochukwu, Nigeria’ Ambassador to Israel, is Anambra State-born Legal Practitioner.
Ufochukwu, holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, and obtained her Barrister-at-Law qualification from the Nigerian Law School. She is currently pursuing a Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Human Rights Law and Diplomacy at the Inview University of East London.
A corporate lawyer and member of the International Bar Association, Ufochukwu has over 15 years of professional experience in the legal and policy sectors. Her work spans litigation, mediation, corporate advisory services and international arbitration.
Her career combines private legal practice with roles in public service, particularly in areas related to technology policy and regulatory frameworks.
Before her diplomatic appointment, she served as Special Adviser on Legal Affairs to Nigeria’s former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology. In that role, she provided legal counsel on intellectual property matters, technology regulation and bilateral collaborations with global technology companies.
4.Mahmud Yakubu
Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, A prominent Nigerian academic and former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Yakubu earned a first‑class degree in history and advanced degrees from Wolfson College, Cambridge and the University of Oxford. He led INEC from 2015 to 2025 and brings deep experience in governance and institutional leadership to his new diplomatic role in Qatar.
