VACANCY………. UNILORIN commence search for next VC, Librarian
Barely six months to the expiration of the five-year tenure of its incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyu Ambali, the University of Ilorin has begun in earnest the search for a successor, expected to step in on October 16, 2017.
The University has also started head-hunting for a new University Librarian, who will succeed the incumbent, Dr. Joseph Omoniyi, whose five-year tenure also terminates on October 12 this year.
This indication became public knowledge with the formal advertisement of the impending vacancies in some national newspapers and on the website of the University.
The two separate advertisements were signed by the Registrar and Secretary to the University’s Governing Council, Mr. Emmanuel Dada Obafemi.
In the first advertisement, entitled “Vacancy Announcement for the Post of Vice-Chancellor”, Mr. Obafemi said, “In accordance with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No. 11 of 1993, as amended by Act No. 25 of 1996 and The Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act 2012, the Council has decided to commence in earnest the due process of appointing a new Vice-Chancellor.”
According to Mr. Obafemi, the ideal candidate for the post must, among other attributes, be a distinguished Professor of not less than 10 years in one of the disciplines offered by the University; a scholar of national and international repute with proficiency in Information and Communication Technology, ICT; a Professor with track records of teaching, research and community service; and a person of entrepreneurial and innovative pre-disposition, with a proven track record appropriate to the vision and mission of a first class University.
The Registrar also stated that the prospective Vice-Chancellor must be of sound health, pleasant disposition and unassailable integrity. “He must also be a person of demonstrable astute managerial ability to maintain the peace and academic stability for which the University is reputed; and a person endowed with entrepreneurial ability and must be able to attract funds for the University from national and international sources”, he said.
Mr. Obafemi said that the appointment would be for a single term of five years and candidates who would have attained the age of 60 years at the point of assumption of office in October need not apply.
In the same vein, the Registrar said, in the second advertisement, entitled “Vacancy for the Post of University Librarian”, that “the Council of the University of Ilorin hereby announces that the post of University Librarian of the University will become vacant with effect from 12th October, 2017. And in accordance with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No. 11 of 1993, as amended by Act No. 25 of 1996 and the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act 2012, the Council has decided to begin the process of appointing a new University Librarian”.
According to Mr. Obafemi, “The candidate, who must have had a minimum of 15 years cognate experience, should possess at least a Master’s Degree in Library Science. A Doctorate Degree will be an added advantage”.
The Registrar also stated that the prospective University Librarian, who will hold office for a single term of five years, “must show evidence of substantial contribution to knowledge through research and scholarly publications in reputable Journals. In addition, the candidate should have proficiency in management and administration, capability to initiate research and be knowledgeable in the application of Computer to Library operations and services”.
Mr. Obafemi added that the ideal candidate should have been a Deputy University Librarian or its equivalent for not less than five years.
All suitably qualified candidates have therefore been directed to submit their applications to the Registrar not later than six weeks from the April 14 date of the publication of the advertisements.
Established in 1975 by the Federal Government, the University of Ilorin is the fastest-growing comprehensive public University in Nigeria with an enviable record of academic stability.

To date, the University has had nine Vice-Chancellors and a Principal, at inception.
