Verdict expected as trial of exiled journalist resumes in Turkey

An Istanbul court on Friday resumed trial against exiled journalist, Can Dundar over allegations of terrorism and espionage, with Dundar’s lawyer Abbas Yalcin telling dpa that a verdict is expected.
The prosecutor has asked for a sentence of up to 35 years over supporting a terrorist organisation and “military or political espionage.’’
Dundar, who’s being tried in absentia, fled to Germany in 2016 to escape legal charges.
The Friday’s trial is a 2015 news report by local daily Cumhuriyet containing information about Turkish intelligence sending arms shipments to Islamist rebels in Syria. At the time, Dundar was editor-in-chief of Cumhuriyet.
An Istanbul court recently declared Dundar a fugitive, seizing all his assets in Turkey.
