WCD 2024: Establish cancer centres, invest in research, Lawan tasks FG
Former Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, has called on the federal government to invest in cancer research and the establishment of cancer centres across the country.
Lawan made the call in a statement, on Sunday, to commemorate the World Cancer Day, WCD 2024 being observed annually on February 4 to raise awareness about cancer, encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment, and mobilize action against the disease.
In the statement signed by his Media Adviser, Ezrel Tabiowo to mark the day, the former Senate President expressed deep concern over the rising incidence of cancer in Nigeria and around the world.
He noted that cancer remains a leading cause of death globally, with millions of new cases diagnosed each year.
“Cancer is a devastating disease that affects not only individuals but also families and communities. It is a major public health challenge that requires our collective attention and action,” Lawan said.
The former Senate President underscored the importance of early detection and treatment in improving cancer outcomes.
He urged Nigerians to be proactive in seeking regular checkups and screenings, particularly for common cancers such as breast, cervical, prostate, and colorectal cancers.
Lawan also emphasized the need for improved access to affordable and quality cancer care services.
He called on the federal government for increased investment in cancer research, the development of new and more effective treatments, and the establishment of comprehensive cancer centers across the country.
The lawmaker representing Yobe North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, urged Nigerians to adopt healthy lifestyles to reduce their risk of developing cancer.
He advised Nigerians to engage in regular physical activity, maintain a healthy diet, avoid tobacco use, and limit alcohol consumption.
“Cancer prevention is key to reducing the burden of the disease. By making healthy choices and taking preventive measures, we can significantly lower our risk of developing cancer,” Lawan added.
He commended healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocates working tirelessly to fight cancer; and also expressed his gratitude to organizations and individuals supporting cancer patients and their families.
The former Senate President called for renewed commitment from all stakeholders to work together to address the challenges posed by cancer.
He expressed belief that, “through collaboration, innovation, and compassion, we can make a real difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.
