Why we’re not interested in voting – Youths
In spite of the awareness to get citizens participate in Saturday’s Presidential and National Assembly elections, some youths were indifferent to the exercise in Ibadan.
On the sidelines of the elections, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) observed that some youths of voting age preferred playing football on the streets to queuing to elect their leaders for the next four years.
Some of such youths were seen in many areas in Ibadan playing football, riding bicycles and discussing in groups, even very close to polling units.
One of them, who simply identified himself as FM, told NAN that he didn’t vote because he had no candidate worthy of being voted for.
FM expressed dissatisfaction with the situation of the country, wondering why no leader had been able to address it.
A lady, who preferred anonymity, said she was afraid of getting involved in the voting process because of violence.
“Anything can just happen and before you know it, they will start fighting. So, I need to beat a retreat,” she said.
Many others like Miss Efe Ogundele complained that they didn’t see any need to vote, ss their votes might not count.
“We have been voting for years now, but how many of our votes are worthily counted?
“In spite of the fact that people will troop out to vote for their candidates, at the end, somebody else will be declared winner. So, all of these are not encouraging,” Ogundele said.
However, while some youths stood aloof, a 90-year-old man, Chief Kola Daisi, was seen being aided to perform his civic right at Unit 3, Ward 8 at Iyaganku area of Ibadan.
When NAN tried to interview him, the nonagenarian, whose son, Kolapo Kola-Daisi, is contesting the Oyo South Senatorial District seat under Accord, said he had no comment.
At Community Grammar School, Oluyole, Ring Road, an electorate was seen taking a nap at around noon after waiting so long for the electoral officers.
Meanwhile, at Oke Are area of Ibadan, a party agent stood backing a baby, sweating profusely under the hot weather.
