Wike Defends FCT Infrastructure Drive, Urges Tax Compliance

Date:

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has defended the Tinubu administration’s infrastructure initiatives, describing the ongoing construction activities in Abuja as a direct implementation of the President’s vision.

Wike made the remarks during the flag-off of the Mohammed Isa Road Extension in Asokoro on Monday, part of a ten-day series of project inaugurations across the capital. The Minister emphasized that the pace of development reflects a government committed to action.

Highlighting public support for the projects, Wike recounted a conversation with a government critic who had privately requested the same road project. “You cannot say FCT is working and Mr. President is not working. It doesn’t make sense,” he stated, asserting that the administration’s efforts align with Tinubu’s vision for Abuja to compete favorably with global cities.

The Minister also stressed the economic benefits of the projects, particularly youth employment, and linked continued development to public cooperation in tax payment. Using a local proverb, he explained, “If you don’t have money to buy the various items, the soup will look like ordinary water. But when you have money, the soup attracts you.” Wike added, “All these good roads, good drainage systems, the street lights, wouldn’t be possible if you don’t pay your taxes. So, try and pay your taxes, so we can provide more.”

Assuring residents of broader sectoral development, Wike stated that the administration’s transformative agenda will extend beyond roads to include the rehabilitation of at least 40 schools and new projects in the health sector. He affirmed that no sector would be left untouched, underlining the government’s commitment to comprehensive development in the FCT.
