World Humanitarian Day: Rotary Club of Lagos Island commends frontline health workers
The Rotary Club of Lagos Island, District 9110, has commended the frontline health workers who were committed to combating the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria.
Its General Secretary, Prinka Puri, gave the commendation in a statement to commemorate the World Humanitarian Day (WHD) celebrated on August 19 annually.
Puri said that COVID-19 pandemic had been curtailed to a minimal extent due to the selfless effort of the care-givers, urging government at all levels to ensure these health workers were properly remunerated.
She said that the health workers were truly “Real life heroes” which was the theme for the 2020 WHD.
“The Rotary Club of Lagos Island is using this opportunity to commend our frontline health workers for their commitment to health care delivery.
“These people are putting their lives on the line to ensure everyone receive adequate treatment, so their welfare should be paramount to the government; it is indeed a huge sacrifice,” she said.
Puri reiterated the club’s commitment to humanitarian service, adding that the club would reach out to the less privileged and continue to give out safety kits to curtail the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
She said that so far, over 1000 individuals had benefited from the club’s free distribution of hand sanitisers, face masks and other food palliatives.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Humanitarian Day is an international day dedicated to recognise humanitarian personnel and those who lost their lives working for humanitarian cause.
It marks the day which the then Special Representative of the Secretary-General to Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello and 21 of his colleagues were killed in the bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad.
