A  Ph.D student of the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Ilorin, Maryam Abiola Ahmed, has discovered a medicine for the treatment of diarrhoea.

Mrs. Ahmed came out with a discovery that African Custard apple, scientifically known as Annona Senegalensis, could be used in the treatment of diarrhoea when the root and the stem are mixed together.

She made this disclosure last Tuesday (January 7, 2020) while defending her Ph.D thesis at the Faculty of Science Board Room, University of Ilorin.

Mrs. Ahmed said that the herb could be used for treatment especially for those who could not afford the orthodox medications.

She recommended that the various fractions should be purified and the specific mechanism of action of each of the components as well as the toxicological evaluation should be carried out so that the herb can be developed and used for the treatment of diarrhoea.
