Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has expressed concern over Nigeria’s slim chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying the team cannot afford to miss out on the global tournament.
The Super Eagles currently sit third in Group C, three points adrift of leaders Benin Republic and second-placed South Africa. To keep their qualification hopes alive, they must secure maximum points from their remaining fixtures against Lesotho and Benin.
Speaking on Brila FM, Yobo emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s presence at the World Cup, describing football as a vital part of the nation’s identity.
“For a country like Nigeria not to be there, it doesn’t make sense. It affects everyone because football is a huge part of our culture,” Yobo said.
“We can’t keep making these mistakes. I’m not even thinking about not qualifying — I’m just hoping a miracle happens somewhere. But we must play our part first.”
Yobo, who captained the Super Eagles during his illustrious career, urged the team to show greater determination and focus in the crucial final qualifying matches.
