Gayam Ward officials in Nasarawa State have announced the immediate suspension of the state All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman, Dr. Aliyu Bello, citing anti-party activities and gross misconduct.
At a press conference on Monday in Lafia, the Ward Chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Iliyasu, declared that Bello’s suspension followed unanimous agreement by all ward executives, anchored on “credible evidence” that he supported a rival political candidate in violation of the APC Constitution.
“We, the undersigned executives of APC Gayam Ward, hereby suspend Dr. Aliyu Bello with immediate effect,” Iliyasu stated, citing Article 21 of the party’s constitution.
He accused Bello of breaching party discipline, loyalty, and ethics — specifically referencing Article 21(i), (ii), and (vii), which prohibit anti-party activities, bringing the party into disrepute, and supporting rival parties.
“We have reports that he openly aligned with a candidate from another political party — a move that has embarrassed loyal members and eroded trust,” Iliyasu added.
The ward executives resolved to forward the resolution to the Lafia Local Government APC, the Nasarawa State Executive Committee, and the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) for ratification and further disciplinary steps.
They also warned Bello to stop parading himself as a party member until the matter is resolved.
But Just Hours Later… The State Strikes Back
In a dramatic twist, the Nasarawa State APC convened an emergency State Executive Council meeting, during which they passed a vote of confidence in Bello’s leadership and that of Governor Abdullahi Sule.
Speaking on behalf of the state APC, Publicity Secretary Hon. Otaru Douglas described the ward-level suspension attempt as a “clandestine plot” allegedly orchestrated by a disgruntled governorship aspirant.
“This is a clear reaffirmation of loyalty to tested leadership,” Douglas said. “The party in Nasarawa remains united and stands strongly with Hon. Aliyu Bello and Governor Sule.”
With the battle lines drawn between grassroots ward officials and the state leadership, the APC in Nasarawa faces a test of internal cohesion just as 2027 political realignments begin to unfold.
