Zimbabwe approves $1b for  Robert Mugabe University

The government of Zimbabwe has approved $1 billion grant for the establishment of Robert Gabriel Mugabe University, APA reports.

The proposed named after the long-serving leader of the country would be constructed in Mazowe district, about 40km northwest of Harare.near Harare.

The Higher Education Minister, Mr. Jonathan Moyo, said that cabinet has approved a $800 million grant and another $200 million for the establishment of the university’s endowment fund for research and innovation.

The minister said the university would concentrate on the “critical STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) areas almost exclusively at graduate level to produce super specialists and super experts.

The experts are expected to champion Zimbabwe’s industrialisation and modernisation for sustainable socio-economic transformation and development, he said.

The university would have eight faculties covering computer engineering, nano-science and nanotechnology, actuarial and mathematical sciences, architectural and structural engineering.

Other courses are telecommunications and electronic engineering, biomedical engineering, international relations and geospatial intelligence, and biotechnology engineering.

It is expected to be ready by June 2018.
