Former Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain committed to the party, urging unity and patience amid the party’s ongoing internal challenges.
In a statement shared via his official Facebook page on Wednesday, Saraki expressed his continued loyalty to the PDP and emphasized the need for collective efforts to restore the party’s strength and relevance. His remarks followed his attendance at a PDP Consultative Conference convened by party elder statesman and founding member, Professor Jerry Gana.
“It was an honour to join the founding fathers and stakeholders of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, today at the Consultative Conference,” Saraki wrote.
Reflecting on the party’s contributions to Nigeria’s development, Saraki noted that the PDP’s 16-year tenure produced significant achievements, including transforming Nigeria into Africa’s largest economy and fostering greater national unity. He urged members not to turn their backs on the party during difficult times.
“Let’s not abandon a ship in need of repairs. If you must leave, let it be on ideology, not anger,” he stated.
Saraki warned against the influence of divisive propaganda and stressed that rebuilding the PDP should be seen as a patriotic duty. “The ultimate goal must be to put Nigeria first and rise above the propaganda designed to divide us as a party,” he said.
He also commended Professor Gana for facilitating what he described as a much-needed “family meeting,” adding that such gatherings are crucial in renewing trust and cooperation among stakeholders.
Reaffirming his personal commitment to the party, Saraki declared, “The PDP was built on solid foundations. Its founders handed it over to us with trust. God forbid that we become the generation that lets it fall apart.”
He concluded by appealing to members to stand firm, saying, “I urge all true patriots of the PDP to agree that for the greater good of Nigeria, leaving is not an option.”
