The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported that 24 passengers were rescued, 14 bodies recovered, and 42 remain missing following a boat accident on the River Niger in Ibaji Local Government Area, Kogi State.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, involved a vessel carrying approximately 80 passengers traveling from Onugwa community to Olushi village. NEMA said in a post on X that search and rescue operations commenced immediately, with the agency’s Abuja Operations Office deploying personnel to assist local responders.
Community divers, state and local emergency management teams, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the National Inland Waterways Authority, the Fire Service, and the Nigerian Red Cross Society are actively participating in the ongoing recovery efforts.
“The joint effort underscores the importance of multi-agency collaboration in tackling disasters and ensuring a timely response,” NEMA said. The agency emphasized the need for strict compliance with water safety regulations, including the use of life jackets and adherence to passenger limits.
President Bola Tinubu condoled with the government and people of Kogi State, describing the incident as “shocking and unfortunate.” In a statement signed by his Information and Strategy Adviser, Bayo Onanuga, the president praised first responders and urged operators to prioritise safety over profit.
Boat accidents remain a recurring challenge in Nigeria’s riverine states, often caused by overcrowded vessels, poorly maintained boats, and lax safety enforcement.
