Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the National Assembly, has cast serious doubt on the chances of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2027 general elections, declaring the party too fractured to win.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Political Paradigm on Tuesday, Kingibe admitted that while she is still officially a member of the Labour Party, her political loyalty is now with the opposition coalition being championed on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform.
“Yes, I am still a member of the Labour Party — but I support the ADC,” she said.
She explained that her decision to align with the ADC stemmed from the current state of disarray within LP, warning that the party’s unresolved internal crisis would jeopardize the opposition’s prospects in the FCT and beyond.
“The Labour Party is in some sort of a quagmire. We are trying to put it together, but I do not see the Labour Party, in the present way it is, as a vehicle that can win any election. It’s been very fractured and broken,” she added.
Kingibe revealed that the ADC was selected as a credible platform for the upcoming local government elections in the FCT because the Labour Party has been rendered ineffective by factional disputes.
“There are two factions in the Labour Party right now. The FCT can win—not on APC, but definitely not on a divided LP. ADC has credible candidates, and that’s the platform we are going to use to show them,” she said.
When asked if she might officially dump the Labour Party due to its internal chaos, the senator didn’t rule out the possibility.
“If the leadership crisis continues, yes — I may leave eventually,” she concluded.
