The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has sealed a residential building in the Jooro area of Asadam, Ilorin, due to an open soakaway system and persistent offensive odour, which officials say posed a serious risk to public health and environmental safety.
The action was taken on Tuesday during a routine inspection by the agency’s task force. The property was found to be discharging toxic effluents into the environment, emitting strong odours in violation of state environmental regulations.
Sanitarian Abigail Are, who led the enforcement team on behalf of KWEPA General Manager Hon. Jide Aina, described the situation as a pressing health concern. “The open soakaway system is not only polluting the environment but also endangering residents by increasing the risk of waterborne and airborne diseases,” she said.
She emphasized that KWEPA remains committed to enforcing environmental laws and holding violators accountable. “We will continue to take decisive action against property owners who disregard hygiene and endanger the lives of others. Ensuring public safety and environmental protection is a collective responsibility,” she added.
KWEPA reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on environmental infractions and urged all property owners to comply with proper sewage and waste management standards.
The agency also encouraged residents to report environmental violations to its offices or through designated hotlines to support efforts in maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
