Women’s Euro: England oust Sweden on penalties

Date:

England staged a dramatic comeback to secure a place in the semi-finals of the Women’s Euro 2025 after defeating Sweden 3–2 on penalties in Zurich on Thursday.

The reigning champions looked to be on the verge of elimination, trailing 2–0 with just over 10 minutes left in regular time. However, late goals from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang forced extra time, and ultimately penalties, where England held their nerve to advance.

Sweden had taken control early in the match, with Kosovare Asllani opening the scoring just two minutes in—her 50th international goal—before Stina Blackstenius doubled the lead before halftime.

But England, under coach Sarina Wiegman, mounted a spirited fightback in the second half. Bronze’s strike in the 79th minute cut the deficit, and substitute Agyemang equalised shortly after, turning the tide of the game.

In the resulting penalty shootout, Smilla Holmberg missed the decisive kick for Sweden, sending her effort over the bar and ending Sweden’s hopes of a first major tournament title since winning the inaugural UEFA Women’s Championship in 1984.

England will now face Italy in the semi-finals on Tuesday in Geneva. The Italians are making their first semi-final appearance in the competition since 1997.
