Onigbinde: Teslim Balogun Nigeria’s Greatest Footballer

Date:

Chief Adegboye Onigbinde

Former Super Eagles coach Chief Adegboye Onigbinde has described late football icon Teslim ‘Thunder’ Balogun as the greatest footballer Nigeria has ever produced. The tribute comes as the Balogun family marks the 53rd memorial anniversary of the football legend.

Balogun, renowned for his powerful shots and clinical finishing, had a distinguished career spanning over a decade with the national team. He won the Challenge Cup five times in seven appearances and made history in 1953 by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in the competition.

His career also saw a brief stint in England. After touring the UK with a Nigerian select side in 1949, Balogun returned to Britain in 1955 to join Peterborough United. He later featured for Skegness Town and Queens Park Rangers, scoring three goals in 13 appearances during the 1956/57 Football League season.

Following his retirement from playing, Balogun transitioned into coaching. He became one of Nigeria’s pioneering professionally qualified coaches and led the national team at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico.

Reflecting on Balogun’s legacy, Onigbinde said, “The greatest footballer Nigeria ever produced is Teslim Balogun, there’s no doubt about it. He did many things players before him, those of his time and after, and even years to come, have been unable to do with the ball.”

He also recalled Balogun’s brilliance in a memorable match: “The greatest goal scored by any player I have seen play was by Balogun at the Olubadan Stadium in 1968 in the match between the national team, the UK Tourists, and England.”

Balogun remains a towering figure in Nigeria’s football history, both for his achievements on the pitch and his contributions to the development of the game off it.
