Lamido: ADC Not My Political Size

Date:

Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has dismissed reports suggesting his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the party as a “smaller skin” unfit for his political identity.

Speaking with journalists in Kano on Tuesday, Lamido reaffirmed his unwavering allegiance to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), despite acknowledging the internal challenges facing the opposition party.

“I’m still in the PDP, even though the party has some problems,” Lamido said. “But I cannot renounce my history. I can’t simply walk out of my skin and crawl in flesh and blood to be conferred with a smaller skin called ADC. I cannot.”

Lamido emphasized that the PDP has been central to his political career, having served as Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Governor of Jigawa State under its platform. He insisted that leaving the party would amount to abandoning his legacy and political heritage.

“So, I cannot simply renounce my history, my legacy, and my heritage and say, ‘Today I got something new.’ I am out of PDP. I will not do that,” he added.

However, Lamido expressed openness to future political collaborations aimed at protecting Nigeria’s democratic future.

“I believe in Nigeria. So any arrangement, be it within or outside the PDP, that will secure and save Nigeria—I am ready to work with it in 2027,” he stated.

On the debate surrounding the creation of additional states in Nigeria, Lamido questioned its relevance to the nation’s immediate concerns. “Will the creation of new states solve our problems—insecurity, poverty, hunger, and division between the North and the South?” he asked. “There are more pressing issues.”

Commenting on Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso’s recent visit to President Bola Tinubu, Lamido said the former Kano governor had the right to make such a political move.
