Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has revealed why he decided to leave Vinicius Junior on the bench during Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League win over Olympique de Marseille.
Los Blancos secured a 2-1 victory at the Santiago Bernabéu thanks to two penalties converted by Kylian Mbappé, after Timothy Weah had given the visitors a surprise lead.
Alonso opted to start Rodrygo ahead of Vinicius on the left flank, with the Brazilian winger only introduced in the second half.
Explaining his decision after the match, Alonso highlighted the need for rotation during a congested schedule.
“We’re at a demanding point in the calendar and we need everyone,” Alonso told reporters. “Everyone will get their moment. The important thing is that each player feels prepared and important, because they are, and they will be throughout the season.”
The Spaniard’s approach appears to be working, with Madrid maintaining a perfect start to their European campaign under his leadership.
