The Zamfara State Police Command has confirmed that eight worshippers were abducted during morning prayers in Gidan Turbe, Tsafe Local Government Area. The incident, which occurred around 5:07 am on Monday, was initially reported by some media outlets as involving 40 victims.
Police spokesperson Yazid Abubakar clarified in a statement on Tuesday that the actual number of abductees was eight, naming them as Liman Yahaya, Dan Garfi, Malam Damu, Bello Natsuhuwa, Yakubu Isa, Audu Minista, Yaquba Ado, and Sabi Usman. He dismissed earlier claims of 40 victims as inaccurate.
Abubakar explained that suspected bandits carried out the attack and assured that the command is working closely with other security agencies and community leaders to secure the safe release of the captives.
The police also appealed to the public and media to verify information from official sources before dissemination, stressing that exaggerated reports could cause unnecessary panic. “The command remains committed to the protection of lives and property,” Abubakar added.
The abduction highlights the growing trend of attacks on worshippers in northern Nigeria. Last month, a mosque in Lafiagi, Kwara State, was attacked, leaving one worshipper dead. Security agencies continue to intensify efforts to curb such incidents.
