Crisis Sparked by Student’s Death
According to police spokesman SP Wasiu Abiodun, Jafar died after the violent attack on June 23. The tragedy sparked student protests that quickly escalated into a crisis within the Lapai community, prompting the deployment of police tactical teams to restore order.
Suspects Linked to Cult Groups
Following investigations, seven individuals were identified and arrested for offenses including criminal conspiracy, robbery, unlawful society, internet fraud, possession of weapons, and suspected culpable homicide. Some suspects allegedly confessed to being members of the Neo Black Movement of Africa (NBM), while another was linked to a rival group, Vikings.
Items Recovered in Arrests
Among those arrested were Idris Hamza and Suleiman Damilare, who were picked up with cannabis, charms, and a Toyota Corolla at a residence in Fadikpe. Their statements reportedly led to the arrest of other suspects believed to be involved in cult-related activities within the university community.
Investigation Still Ongoing
Police said that a total of 19 individuals had initially been arrested across Lapai and other locations before investigations narrowed the list to seven key suspects. Authorities assured that investigations remain ongoing to ensure justice for the slain student and restore confidence within the university.
