Jimeta Market Reforms Boost Trade, Accessibility in Adamawa

Date:

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri’s administration has launched a major reform of the Jimeta Ultra-Modern Market, restoring the facility to its original design and layout after years of encroachment, illegal structures, and distortions. The initiative has drawn praise from both supporters and critics, and is seen as a step toward improving trade and ensuring order in one of Adamawa State’s busiest commercial hubs.

The Honourable Commissioner for Commerce, Trade, and Industries, Ishaya John Dabari, said the Ministry has been collaborating closely with the Urban Planning Department, with full support from security agencies, to implement the restoration exercise.

“One of the major challenges identified was the blockage of most entry and exit points, leaving only two gates accessible. This hampered vehicular movement, discouraged customers, affected traders’ patronage, and reduced government revenue,” Dabari explained.

He emphasized that no trader with a legally acquired shop has been affected by the ongoing demolition. “We held several consultations with traders, providing reasonable notice and ample publicity before the exercise,” he added.

The reorganization aims not only to restore order but also to enhance safety, accessibility, and the overall commercial appeal of the market.

In a related development, Governor Fintiri announced plans to construct a new Building Materials Market in the state. The project, which will feature over 2,000 modern shops, is expected to provide traders with a more organized and secure environment, stimulate commercial growth, and create employment opportunities.

Observers note that these twin initiatives—the restoration of Jimeta Ultra-Modern Market and the planned Building Materials Market—reflect the government’s commitment to urban planning, infrastructure renewal, and economic empowerment in Adamawa State.
