Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has emphasized the importance of states maintaining cordial relations with the federal government, regardless of political differences, noting that such collaboration accelerates development at subnational levels.
Wike spoke on Wednesday during the inauguration of the 15.13km Ika-Azumini Highway, which links Abia and Rivers States, in Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State. He commended Governor Umo Eno for effectively utilising federal resources, particularly funds freed up following the removal of the fuel subsidy, to benefit the people.
According to Wike, the previous subsidy framework had hindered national progress, making President Bola Tinubu’s decision to scrap it a necessary step. He added that the move has already positively impacted states, allowing more funds to flow from the federal centre for local development projects.
Reflecting on his experience as a former governor, Wike described the subsidy era as a “bitter pill” that placed a heavy burden on state administrations. He encouraged Governor Eno to ensure that development reaches all parts of Akwa Ibom, stressing the importance of presenting a strong performance record ahead of the 2027 elections.
Governor Eno, in response, thanked President Tinubu for the financial flexibility granted to states and pledged to use the funds judiciously, without resorting to external borrowing. He assured residents that the administration would complete ongoing projects, maintain fiscal discipline, and leave a debt-free legacy for his successor in 2031.
Chairman of Ika Local Government Area, UtibeAbasi Nwoko, praised the completion of the inter-state road, noting that it has eased transportation challenges and strengthened economic and social ties between Abia and Rivers States.
