Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on Nigerians to remain hopeful despite current challenges, emphasizing the nation’s potential for greatness. He delivered the message in a goodwill statement on the occasion of Nigeria’s 65th Independence anniversary.
Issued by his Media Adviser, Mr. Okechukwu Eze, in Abuja on Wednesday, Jonathan noted that the anniversary provides an opportunity for reflection on Nigeria’s journey, its challenges, and the possibilities that lie ahead.
He stated, “It is true that we face challenges that could test our sense of hope—such as insecurity, economic disparities, and institutions that sometimes struggle to deliver on promises of improved wellbeing, peace, and security. Yet, as citizens, we must not lose faith. We must continue to nurture hope and sustain belief in the nation’s enormous potential and the resilience of the people.”
Jonathan highlighted Nigeria’s abundant resources, vast land, and the creativity and ingenuity of its people. He also praised the nation’s cultural richness, knowledge, and global influence.
He urged citizens to let patriotism guide their actions, saying, “Let us hold firmly to optimism and faith, knowing that the greatness of our country is within reach if we remain united and steadfast. May our nation continue to rise in strength and purpose.”
The message comes after the Federal Government announced the cancellation of the Independence Day parade for the 65th anniversary.
