Former Kwara Governor, Abdulfatai Ahmed, Pledges Support for UNILORIN Golden Jubilee

Date:

The immediate past Governor of Kwara State, Alhaji Abdulfatai Ahmed, has expressed his profound admiration for the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), citing the institution’s significant impact on his life and its contributions to humanity.

Alhaji Ahmed, a 1986 graduate of the University’s Department of Chemistry, made this declaration on Tuesday, October 14, 2025, while receiving a delegation from the UNILORIN Golden Jubilee Planning Committee at his GRA residence in Ilorin.

The former Governor reflected on his student days, emphasizing the role of UNILORIN in shaping his character, career, and life trajectory. He urged stakeholders in Nigeria’s education sector to ensure that school curricula are purposefully designed to drive national progress, as done in other countries.

“The University played a pivotal role in moulding my character and equipping me for life. Its positive influence extends beyond me to humanity at large,” Alhaji Ahmed said.

The delegation, led by Prof. Olugbenga Ayodeji Mokuolu, Chairman of the Golden Jubilee Planning Committee, formally briefed the former Governor on the upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations scheduled for next month. Represented by Prof. Waheed Babatunde Yahya, Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Alumni Day, Prof. Mokuolu highlighted that Alhaji Ahmed is the only state governor produced by UNILORIN since its establishment, making him a distinguished alumnus and a fitting contributor to the milestone celebrations.

Alhaji Ahmed has been slated as one of the speakers at the Alumni Day colloquium, where his vast experience in teaching, banking, politics, and governance will benefit attendees.

Also speaking, Mrs. Kafilat Taiwo Afolayan, Secretary of the Anniversary Planning Committee and Deputy Registrar (Senate), lauded the former Governor as one of the University’s outstanding alumni. She encouraged other alumni to visit the University, observe its progress, and participate in its ongoing initiatives. Mrs. Afolayan further assured Alhaji Ahmed that the Committee would engage him in additional consultations ahead of the celebrations.

During the visit, the delegation presented the former Governor with a detailed document outlining the Golden Jubilee programme. Other members of the team included Prof. Nwosu, Dean of the Postgraduate School; Deputy Registrars Mrs. Abimbola Ologe and Mrs. Elizabeth O. Nnaji; Senior Assistant Registrar Mr. Abdulkadir Olayinka Kuranga; and Deputy Director of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Abubakar Imam.

Alhaji Ahmed expressed gratitude to the University management for the visit and confirmed his participation in the anniversary events, pledging continued support for his alma mater.
