Five Years Enough for Vice Chancellors — Egbewole

Date:

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole (SAN), has said that a single term of five years is sufficient for Vice Chancellors of Nigerian universities to make meaningful impact in office.

Prof. Egbewole stated this on Monday, October 20, 2025, during a press briefing held as part of activities marking the institution’s 40th convocation ceremonies.

According to him, five years is long enough for any university chief executive—whether in a federal, state, or privately-owned institution—to leave a lasting legacy. He added that anyone unable to make a mark within that period is unlikely to achieve much even with an extended tenure.

“The responsibilities of a Vice Chancellor are too demanding and energy-sapping for such a tenure to be prolonged,” Egbewole said. “Personally, I will be delighted to end my tenure in 2027 and return to the warm embrace of my family.”

The Vice Chancellor urged his colleagues across the country to make the best use of their time in office, noting that those who work diligently within their five-year term would neither desire nor pray for a second.

On the University’s operations, Prof. Egbewole reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to maintaining strong relations with staff and students. He said this cordial relationship is crucial for sustaining the institution’s record of uninterrupted academic calendar and industrial harmony for the benefit of students, parents, and the nation.
