Senate confirms Are, Dalhatu, Oke as non-career ambassadors

Date:

Senate, on Tuesday, confirmed the nominations of the first three non-career ambassadors forwarded to it by President Bola Tinubu two weeks ago.

Those confirmed are Lateef Kayode Are from Ogun State, Aminu Muhammad Dalhatu (Jigawa), and Emmanuel Ayodele Oke from Oyo State, respectively.

The confirmations followed the consideration of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Senator Sani Bello (APC Niger North), which had last week screened the nominees.

Presenting the report, Senator Bello said all the three nominees were found worthy of their appointments without any petition against them.

In his remarks, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, urged the confirmed nominees to serve as worthy ambassadors of Nigeria wherever they are posted.

Tinubu’s letter containing the names of the nominees was read during plenary on November 26 by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, after which he referred it to the Committee on Foreign Affairs for their screening.

The President, in the letter, said that the nominations were made in accordance with Section 171 (1), (2)(c) and (4) of the 1999 constitution, as amended.

He, therefore, urged the Senate to “consider and confirm the appointments of the nominees expeditiously” while extending his “assurances of highest consideration” to the lawmakers.

There are 64 other ambassadorial nominees forwarded to the Senate for screening and are yet to be confirmed.
