A man identified as Alachi has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife following a disagreement in Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Thursday at Amaji Village in Umuoyoro Community, Omuma Local Government Area, where the couple had reportedly gone to work on their farm before a misunderstanding escalated into violence.
According to a community source who spoke anonymously, the quarrel turned deadly when the suspect allegedly used a kitchen knife to slit his wife’s throat. The victim, a mother of two, reportedly cried out for help, attracting nearby villagers.
Residents rushed to the scene, subdued the suspect and prevented him from fleeing before handing him over to authorities.
The suspect was later transferred to the Eberi Police Division, which has jurisdiction over the area. A security source said that during preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly claimed he was not in control of himself at the time of the attack.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the suspect is in custody.
“Yes, I can confirm the incident. The suspect has been arrested, and the Commissioner of Police has ordered a detailed investigation into the matter to ensure timely justice,” she said.
Reacting, human rights activist Prince Wiro, National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights and Accountability Campaign, condemned the killing and called for a thorough investigation to ensure justice for the deceased.
